Old-Time Fiddle Repertoire with Matt Brown
This class will meet online - an invitation to a recurring Zoom meeting will be included in the orientation email sent upon checkout.
Join Matt Brown for an exploration of Kentucky’s rich fiddle traditions. Covering obscure and common tunes, we will become more fluent in bowing patterns, ornamentation, and melodic variations from venerated source musicians across the commonwealth.
This class is appropriate for intermediate-advanced players who are comfortable learning tunes quickly and through a screen. The aim is to learn a new tune each class while regularly reviewing material from previous weeks. The listening skills of the student must be well developed, as we will be referencing field recordings and old commercial recordings to understand and evoke the archaic sound of Kentucky’s mountain music masters.
In this session, students will learn "Bonaparte’s Retreat" and "Piney Ridge" from William Hamilton Stepp, "Going Across the Sea" from Burnett & Rutherford, a pair of J. P. Fraley tunes, and one tune each from Emma Lee Dickerson and Hiram Stamper.
