Folk Songs of the Kentucky Mountains
Folk Songs of the Kentucky Mountains with Carla Gover
This class will meet online - an invitation to a recurring Zoom meeting will be sent by the instructor in advance of the first class meeting.
Carla grew up in Letcher County, Kentucky, as part of a musical family that sang for work, play, and worship. In this class, which is open to all levels of experience, she’ll share songs from her family and community, as well as some of the great mountain singers she’s had the opportunity to learn from such as Ginny Hawker, Kay Justice, Hazel Dickens, Jean Ritchie, Wade and Julia Mainer, Doc Watson, and Nimrod Workman.
Students will explore a variety of styles including unaccompanied Appalachian ballads, coal songs, hymns, humorous songs, and more.
Students will also be given lyric sheets with Nashville numbers system chords, where applicable, so that after the course is over they can accompany themselves using the instruments and keys of their choice.
