90’s Country 101 with Tyler Lance Walker Gill

This class will meet online on Zoom -an invitation to a recurring Zoom meeting will be sent by the instructor in advance of the first class meeting.

In this class, we’re taking a trip back in time. Back to when the hats were cowboy, the King was George, and we all water-skied in ripped up blue jeans. To the time before Garth became Chris Gaines. To the (debatably) last great era of popular country music: the 90’s!

Each week we will learn how to play 1 to 2 classic 90’s country hits, from some of the great names in the neo-traditionalist movement such as Alan Jackson, George Strait, Reba, The (formerly Dixie) Chicks, Garth, and Clint Black among others. I’ll pick the songs for the first half of the semester, and discuss song options with the class for the second half of the semester.

We will also discuss the songs themselves, the writers who wrote them, and the performers who made them famous, as well as the basic structures that make up a country song.

By the end of the semester, our goal is to have you prepared to break out the ol’ acoustic around a campfire and entertain (or annoy) your close friends and family with at least a dozen 90’s country tunes. However, our main goal is to have fun while learning some relatively simple songs.

This course is designed for those with a beginner to intermediate understanding of guitar, and ability to play and change from chord to chord in the “cowboy position” (aka, all of your basic chords in the first position - A, B, C, D, E, F, G). We may come across an odd chord here or there, which we can discuss more in depth if necessary. (As we will be learning just the basic bones/rhythm guitar parts of these songs, other instruments are welcome - however, we will not be discussing specific parts for other instruments).

Recommended prerequisite: novice to intermediate guitar skills, ability to play basic chords, and change chords smoothly.

Let’s go boot scootin’.
