Advanced African Drumming
Advanced African Drumming with Angela Scharfenberger
This class will meet in person in Louisville at Tim Faulkner Gallery at the corner of Logan and Kentucky Streets. All seats will be at least 6ft apart and everyone will be wearing masks at all times. A signed waiver is required to complete your registration.
In Advanced African Drumming, we will build on the rhythms we learned in previous semesters of African Drumming. We will further explore polyrhythm, adding new rhythms with more complex drumming patterns. We will also dive deeper into understanding this music in a cultural context.
We will further develop soloing and breaks in an African drum ensemble. Through the teaching of repetitive advanced lead parts, students will begin to develop an ear for improvising within the tradition. Angela draws on 25 years of experience learning from and performing beside master drummers.
Prerequisite: African Drumming 1.
