

African Songs and Mbira WITH ANGELA SCHARFENBERGER
This class will meet in person on Tuesdays from 8:00-9:00 pm on April 11, 18, 25, and May 2.
Location: Chapel St Philip Neri, 236 Woodbine St, Louisville, KY 40208.
African Songs & Mbira ('thumb piano")
This class is an introduction to some of the joyful, rich songs from Zimbabwe. We will focus on the Mbira Nyunganyunga, an easy-to-learn 15-key mbira handmade in Zimbabwe. Instruments are lent to students for the class term.
In class, we will:
- Learn basic patterns on the Mbira Nyunganyunga
- Learn the basics of African language pronunciation
- Learn the melody and harmony parts for each song
- Refine the beautifully simple art of call and response
- Learn the meaning and the cultural/historical context of the song
All songs are taught by oral tradition.
Open to students 12 and over.
