Building Bass Lines
Building String Band Bass Lines with Blue Murphy
An exploration of bass timing, feel, and chord transitions in the context of Bluegrass, Swing, Country, and Irish music. The focus of this class is to build the skills needed to succeed as a bass player for various styles and situations by serving the needs of each song. To that end, we will learn:
- techniques to improve intonation
- explore how timing and note duration contribute to a song
- how scales and chords are related
- how to use scale numbering to aid in transposing music on the fly.
We will discuss the role of the bass player in the contexts of bands, jams, and improvisations and practice techniques for fulfilling those roles.
Open to upright and electric bass. Must have your own instrument and amplification, if necessary. We have two "house" upright basses that can be reserved for use in our classroom during class, on a first requested basis.
