With roots in both Africa and the Appalachian Mountains, this style combines rhythm and melody to create a sound perfect for the back porch, for singing or for playing in a string band. This class is intended for both new students and those who have started their banjo journey and wish to strengthen and extend what they may have learned in an introductory class or lesson.
Students will learn all of the fundamental techniques of this style, enabling them to learn standards of the old-time repertoire and beyond. For beginners or those who wish to brush up on the basics - no prior experience necessary! In this class students will learn:
the basic clawhammer strum
basic chords such as G, C, and D7
how to play simple chord and melody arrangements of songs and tunes.
While tabs will be provided, students will also learn how to find the melody for a tune and tune it into a clawhammer arrangement.
