Women’s Voices of Appalachia: with Julia Purcell
Women’s Voices of Appalachia: learning and singing songs of
influential female artists from the Appalachian region and beyond.
This course is for those who are interested in learning more about the
influence of women in the vocal and instrumental traditions of the Appalachian
region. We will explore original works, traditional tunes, work songs,
play party songs, religious/spiritual songs, and ballads.
Studens will learn:
- Brief history of women in Traditional and Folk music genres
- Songs specific to Appalachian region and the women who performed them: including but not limited to: Hazel Dickens, Alice Gerard, Cousin Emmy, Addie Graham, Lily May Ledferd, Jean Ritchie, Maybelle and Sarah Carter, and lesser known, yet important women in the tradition
- The history and importance of Aural Learning/Tradition
- Basic music theory, music terminology, and specific vocal stylings and techniques
This class is open to women and those who identify as female. Recommended 15y.o. and above. No prior experience necessary, just a willingness to learn and have fun singing!
