Duets Workshop/Playshop with Julia Purcell

During this 3 hour workshop, we will explore a variety of duets within the Appalachian Folk Tradition and beyond. The instructor will create a safe space wherein the student can explore the uniqueness and full capacity of their own voice while connecting with other compatible voices. We will play around with elements of harmony, arrangement, storytelling, call and response, singing in unison, a cappella singing, and performance.
We will explore the rich catalog of well-known duos, including Dolly and Porter; June Carter Cash & Johnny; Gillian Welch & David Rawlings; Stanley Brothers; Everly Brothers; Sara & Maybelle Carter; Hazel and Alice; Tim and Molly O’Brien; and Doc Watson and Rosa Lee Watson.
At the end of the workshop, students will have a broad repertoire of duets, a strong understanding of harmonization theory, and an ability to hear and sing both the melody and harmony of all the songs.
This course is designed for those with previous experience singing in large and small groups. Students will also have the opportunity to learn accompaniment styles and techniques on their preferred instrument. Bring your preferred instrument(s)!
