Early String Band Ensemble with Rachel Meirs
This class meets on eight Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 pm beginning March 20th
This multi-instrumental group will focus on learning pre-war (pre-WWII, that is) string band tunes. The bands of this era played tunes that will be familiar to old-time players, along with melodies pulled from pop and dance songs, rags and songs influenced by early jazz, and classic blues and country waltzes.
This class is open to advanced and intermediate players. You're probably good to go if you’ve taken Rachel's rags class or the country-blues workshop with her and Van Burchfield. This ensemble will work on tunes from those classes, including waltzes like this East Texas Serenaders one and the Yellow Dog Blues.
This class will also feature special Zoom-ins and in-person visits from Maxwell Poulos (mandolin/tenor banjo), Ali Kafka (guitar) and Van Burchfield (guitar).
Instruments called for are: fiddle, guitar, mandolin (or banjolin) tenor banjo, and bowed-bass style cello.
This is an adult class open to students aged 13 and up.
