African Singing and Rhythms Together WITH ANGELA SCHARFENBERGER
This class will meet in person on Tuesdays from 6:50-7:50 pm on April 11, 18, 25, and May 2.
Location: Chapel St Philip Neri, 236 Woodbine St, Louisville, KY 40208.
Many African music traditions engage multiple rhythmic patterns, and songs are certainly a part of this structure. In this class, we will use the foundations of African rhythmic systems, such as the timeline (bell) pattern and other ostinato patterns (hand drums, shaker, stick drums) to build the process of learning to play and sing together. We will focus on a few different rhythms.
Previous experience in singing or drumming is helpful! This introductory class will serve as a foundation for understanding how to line up a song with a rhythmic pattern. It is a method that is applicable to other forms of polyrhythmic music structures as well. We will utilize repetition, ear training, and diagramming as tools for building this skill.
