Instrumental Accompaniment for Fiddle Tunes with Cheyenne Mize

This class will meet online via Zoom - an invitation to a recurring Zoom meeting will be sent by the instructor in advance of the first class meeting.

This interactive online course is designed for early-intermediate to advanced rhythm instrument players (i.e. guitar, banjo, bass) who are eager to improve their skills in playing along to fiddle tunes for when we can all jam together again. At the end of the course, participants will be able to provide confident accompaniment on their choice of instrument to a variety of old-time fiddle tunes.

Instruction will include tips and techniques, live and video demonstration of accompaniment styles specific to different instruments, and live practice with the instructor on fiddle at slow, moderate, and jam tempos (around 120 bpm). We will also discuss and practice picking up chords and tune structures in the moment (including how the heck you figure out crooked tunes!), as well as some very basic music theory.

Prerequisites

All participants should be able to tune their own instrument!

Guitar:

  • be able to play all basic chords by name (A, Am, C, D, E, Em, F, G)
  • have a capo and pick

Banjo:

  • know basic clawhammer or finger-picking accompaniment styles
  • be at least somewhat comfortable in Open G (gDGBD), Double C (gCGCD), and G Modal (gDGCD) tunings
  • have a capo (finger picks not necessary, but you are welcome to use them if that is what you are used to)

Bass:

  • be able to play notes on the bass by name (A, C, D, E, F, G)
