Are you curious about African drums? Intro to West African Rhythms is a fun, accessible month-long class to learn the basics of West African music, focusing on drum pieces from Ghana and Nigeria. Through the repetition of simple patterns, we will learn the basics of African rhythm structure and how different parts come together to create a polyrhythmic whole. We will learn drum parts for 2-4 rhythms and discuss their social and cultural significance. I draw on stories from my African music teachers and my studies in Africa.

Drums are provided. Students can use their own hand drums, but buying one for this class is not necessary, as drums can be lent out between classes.  No previous experience is necessary. This class will move at an accessible pace.

Students age 12 and up are welcome; younger students with musical experience may be considered. Please email with questions: angela@louisvillefolkschool.org
