Mandolin 1 with Lauren Price Napier
This class will meet online, weekly on Tuesday evenings. An invitation to a recurring Zoom meeting will be sent by the instructor in advance of the first meeting.
This is your introduction to one of the most fun and versatile folk instruments around – the mandolin! Learn easy chords and strum patterns for a handful of our favorite old-time country and bluegrass standard songs. We will learn the melodies and accompaniment to some of the favorite traditional tunes that have been passed down for generations.
Mandolin 1 is an introductory course for absolute beginners. You don't have to have any musical background to begin playing. This course will introduce all the basic concepts of playing mandolin including:
How to hold the mandolin/how to use a pick (proper posture and hand positioning)
Learn easy, two-finger chords and talk about simple double stops and chord shapes
Develop a basic strum pattern for accompaniment
Learn chords and melodies for several traditional tunes or songs
Students should come prepared to listen and learn. The instructor will do her best to accommodate and assist all students and will prepare supplemental materials to assist in learning as needed. The student should be ready with an instrument, a pick, a tuner, and be in tune before class begins, if possible.
By the end of eight weeks, you'll have learned multiple tunes in different keys and will have a better understanding of the mandolin that you’ll be able to build on thereafter. You’ll soon be on your way to becoming the mandolin player you aspire to be!
Mandolin 1 is a suggested prerequisite for Mandolin 2, which will be offered in Spring 2021.
Open to all, ages 11 through adult.
