My Pet Song with Thomas Deakin

This group class meets on seven Mondays beginning June 5 (skipping June 19).

Here we go for another round of My Pet Song! This time, we'll dig into the classic "Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans."  Once again, we'll strip it down to its most bare-bones harmony, learning it as more of a cowboy chord tune before we tinker and mutate, substitute, and alter our way along into something closer to the jazz standard this song has become. This is open to everyone curious about learning to hear, analyze, perform, and finally talk about what's happening musically by focusing intensely on one song for an entire session. All instruments are welcome, especially singers!

Do you ever feel like you might "know" a tune but don't really know it like you want to? Maybe you've been playing with friends, and the tunes seem to go by too quickly. Or you're just about to figure out what's happening, and that's when the song ends? We've all felt this way, but how do we get past it?

This is a course for people looking for how to listen to a song and figure out just what the heck is going on. By learning every nook and cranny of the classic jazz standard, "Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans," we will understand how to listen to music "from the bottom up," identifying common chord changes, substitutions, and alterations that we have all heard our whole lives, but maybe don't have a concept for just yet.

This course will provide ample time to simplify, complify, dismantle, and remantle one tune until you know it inside out and come away with a process to learn any other tune you might like thoroughly.

Primarily geared toward people who've been playing for a bit and feel familiar with their instruments, but all who are interested are welcome. This class is open to all musicians/instruments, especially singers.

Ages 12 and up.
