Join us for an exploration of Kentucky’s rich musical heritage at the hand of the fiddle, one of the most popular instruments of Appalachia. This course will highlight the tunes and variations played by various women who advanced the Appalachian old time fiddle tradition including Lella Todd, Tatiana Hargreaves, Reyna Gellert, Brittany Haas, and more.
We will become well-versed in bowing patterns, ornamentation, and melodic variation stylistic to these players, and we will also discuss the changing role of women in Appalachian music both historically and presently.
- Students must feel comfortable learning tunes aurally at a slow-moderate tempo as we will be utilizing source recordings and modern recordings to learn tunes.
