Songwriting: Lyrics 101 with Lily Lyons
If you've ever wanted to write your own songs but don’t know where to start or how to overcome your inner critic, then this class is for you. You’ll learn lyric and musical techniques that will get your creativity flowing and help you develop that melody you’ve been singing in the shower into a complete song! This is a hands-on class that will explore the fundamentals of songwriting, with individualized feedback to encourage you to become confident in your unique writing style. Topics and techniques will include:
- Overcoming writer’s block
- Avoiding cliches to create fresh, inventive lyrics
- Writing a memorable melody
- Setting lyrics to music
- Making metaphors and rhymes work for you
- Ways to add interest to basic chord progressions
- Studying the songs you love and discussing the techniques they employ
Goal: By the end of the 8 weeks, you will complete a full song and present it to your classmates.
Prerequisites: No previous experience with songwriting necessary, musicians of all levels and traditions are welcome.
Recommended: Basic ability to play chords and keep a groove on your instrument. Comfort with singing simple melodies.

Lily Lyons is a Louisville-based songwriter, producer, and violinist. Since graduating Berklee College of Music with a bachelor’s degree in songwriting & performance, she has been selected as an Americana honorable-mention winner in the 2017 International Songwriting Competition. Her lush, poetic songs can be heard on cuts by Twisted Pine and Varsha Vinn, and in Daniel Martin Moore’s upcoming Kentucky conservation benefit album.
