IN SEARCH OF A SONG: THE SONGS OF TOM T. HALL
Tom T. Hall is a celebrated songwriter born in Olive Hill, Kentucky. As a teenager, he organized a band called the Kentucky Travelers that performed before movies for a traveling theater. By his 30s he was living and working in Nashville as a songwriter, eventually racking up 12 No. 1 hits and 26 more that reached the top 10. Together with his wife Dixie Hall he won the Bluegrass Song Writer of the Year award in 2002-2005, 2007-2011, and 2013-2015 and has been inducted into the Kentucky Music, Country Music, International Bluegrass Music, and Songwriters Halls of Fame.
This online course will focus on learning and singing the melodies and lyrics of 8-10 of Hall’s original songs. The course is adaptable for all levels of singers, but some singing experience will be helpful. Participants will be strongly encouraged but not required to sing in front of the group throughout the course. Instruction will also include discussion of accompaniment styles, songwriting elements, and recordings of the songs. This is a singing-focused course and therefore instrumental participation is not required. Those who do wish to bring an accompanying instrument should be able to tune their own instrument, play basic chords, and have access to a capo and picks if they use them.
