Waltzes for Clawhammer Banjo
Waltzes FOR CLAWHAMMER BANJO with David Brooks
This class will meet online - an invitation to a recurring Zoom meeting will be sent by the instructor in advance of the first class meeting.
Clawhammer banjo is a versatile playing style that fits well with more than just fiddle tunes and reels. Waltzes are great fun to play in clawhammer. The tempo is slower allowing the banjo’s voice to shine just a bit more. The ¾ time signature adds lilt and grace.
In this course, you will learn to play backup rhythms and melodies for waltzes, such as “Southwind,” “Westphalia Waltz,” and “Midnight on the Water.” Tab will be provided along with step-by-step instruction. Where available, we will use YouTube videos as well.
Who Should Attend
Experiences beginners and intermediate players are welcome in this class. Students should have a basic right-hand clawhammer stroke and the ability to change chords easily in Open G tuning. Several banjo tunings may be used in the class, but students need not know all of these tunings prior to the class:
- open G (gDGBD)
- double-C (gCGCD)
- sawmill (gDGCD)
Open to everyone ages, 11 and up.
