Women’s Voices of Appalachia and Beyond: with Julia Purcell 

Seven week course, beginning October 25

This course is for those who are interested in learning songs from some
of the most influential women’s voices of our time. Songs ranging from
traditional mountain music and folk, to country and bluegrass, such as
music from Hazel Dickens & Alice Gerard, Lily May Ledford, Jean
Ritchie, Mother Maybelle and Sarah Carter, Carter Sisters, Peggy
Seeger, Ella Jenkins, Judy Collins, Odetta, Nina Simone, Joan Baez,
Joni Mitchell, Emmy Lou Harris, Dolly Parton, Gillian Welch among
others.


Studens will learn:

  • Brief history of women in traditional and folk music genres
  • How traditional music has influenced today’s female musicians in the genres of folk, singer-songwriter, country, and bluegrass.
  • Repertoire of songs within the aforementioned genres
  • The history and importance of aural learning tradition
  • Basic music theory, music terminology, specific vocal stylings & techniques, and vocal care
  • Jamming and performing basics


This class is open to women and those who identify as female.
Recommended 15 years old and above. Some group singing experience is
recommended.
