Dulcimer Ensemble with Molly McCormack
Note: there will be no class on April 17th
Playing music in a group can be a valuable learning experience and a whole lot of fun. In this class, you’ll strengthen core playing skills while experiencing the joy of playing music with others in a supportive atmosphere. This is a mixed skills level class for students who have completed Dulcimer 1 skills and beyond. Throughout the 8 weeks, students suggest tunes for the group to learn and play.
You will:
- Practice learning tunes by ear, and explore variations on melodies
- Practice playing backup chords, and hearing chord changes
- Improve timing, strengthen strumming and flatpicking skills
- Review familiar repertoire, and learn new tunes from traditional Appalachian tunes to the original Carter family repertoire
- Arrange tunes for performing
- Play tunes in keys other than D
- Gain experience playing with other instrumentalists in a group such as penny whistle, hammer dulcimer, banjo, guitar, mandolin, etc.
- Improve confidence in playing in jams and small groups
Most of the repertoire for this session will be taught by ear. Dulcimer tab will be provided as a resource for challenging tunes and techniques.
This is an adult class open to students aged 13 and up.
