Sounds of Kentucky - After-School String Band Program
In Spring 2025, the Louisville Folk School launched a new after-school music program for 4th and 5th graders. In our pilot phase, we served 24 students at two elementary schools: Lincoln Performing Arts Elementary and Klondike Elementary.
Students met after school once per week to learn to play folk and traditional music on either a guitar, banjo, mandolin, or fiddle. LFS teaching artists worked with students in small groups to teach the fundamentals of playing music and working together to produce a cohesive sound. This program promotes critical thinking, collaboration, and active listening - skills that are integral to success in academia and future careers.
Student Feedback:
When asked if they would recommend the program to a friend, 92% said YES because...
“I really wanted to play guitar ever since I was little”
“It is fun and you try something new”
“You can learn how to work together to create a masterpiece”
