
Advanced West African Drumming with Charles Amewudah

Gahu is an adaptation of the Kokosawa form of the Yoruba people of Nigeria. The Ewe people from Southeastern Ghana brought it to Ghana, where they increased the tempo to more than double, naming it Gahu (fast part). Kinka is a popular Ewe secular dance-drumming of recent origin (1950) and is characterized by themes reflective of the youthful inclinations for a more liberal lifestyle common among the younger generation in contemporary societies.
You will:
- Make a connection with Ghanian Ewe history and Gahu and Kinka drumming traditions.
- Sing some lyrics of Gahu and Kinka songs.
- Gain experience in how to approach Gahu and Kinka drumming rhythms.
- Familiarize yourself with the names of the drums used in Gahu and Kinka drumming.
- Recognize Gahu rhythm, transitions (breaks), and phrases.
- Recognize the Kinka rhythm, Transitions (breaks), and phrases.
- Participate in West African drumming events with confidence.
Prerequisite: a previous Louisville Folk School African drumming class
This is an adult class open to students aged 13 and up.
