African Drumming with Angela Scharfenberger
This African Drumming group class will serve as an introduction to West African drumming and singing, with a specific focus on drumming traditions from Ghana. Students will learn the basics of African rhythms, how it is structured and how different parts come together to create a polyrhythmic whole. Students will learn the fundamental drumming parts for at least five different rhythms. Sociocultural context will also be included.
All instruments will be provided. Students are welcome to bring their own drum if they have one, but it is not necessary to buy one for the class. Instruments can also be lent out between sessions.
No previous experience necessary. All music will be taught orally.
Some songs will also be taught, from indigenous African languages.
Appropriate for students age 12 to adult.
