Bluegrass Ensemble 1 with Ian Thomas
Playing music with a group can be one of the most rewarding pastimes. Together, we will create an ensemble to explore the music of the creators and innovators of bluegrass. Our sources range from Bill Monroe, The Stanley Brothers, and Flatt & Scruggs to Del McCoury, Larry Sparks, Hazel & Alice, Molly Tuttle, and Billy Strings.
As an ensemble, we will work on listening to supporting others as well as kicking off a song and taking a solo (a.k.a. "break"). In addition to learning and playing the music, each class will take some time to discuss how the music is arranged, why it is arranged that way, and basic theory in a bluegrass context.
The ability to play common chords and easily transition between them is required. In this ensemble, the instructor will provide lyric sheets and chord charts. The ability to read sheet music is not required.
Students should bring their voice for singing, picks, tuners, capos, extra strings for their instrument, a writing implement, and a recording device (a phone works great!).
All singers and bluegrass instruments are welcome.
This is an adult class open to students aged 13 and up.
