Bluegrass Ensemble with Ian Thomas

Playing music with a group can be one of the most rewarding pastimes ever. Together, we will create an ensemble to explore the music of the creators and innovators of bluegrass music. Our sources will range from Bill Monroe, The Stanley Brothers, and Flatt & Scruggs to Del McCoury, Larry Sparks, Hazel & Alice, Molly Tuttle, and Billy Strings.

As an ensemble, we will work on listening and supporting others as well as to kicking off a song and taking a solo (a.k.a. "break"). In addition to learning and playing the music, each class will take some time to discuss how the music is arranged, why it is arranged that way, and basic theory in a bluegrass context.

The ability to play common chords and easily transition between them is required. The Louisville Folk School is an aural learning environment, so while the instructor will provide lyric sheets and chord charts, the ability to read sheet music is not required.

Students should bring to class their voice for singing and picks, tuners, capos, and extra strings for their instrument, as well as a writing implement and a recording device (a phone works great!).

All singers and bluegrass instruments are welcome.

This is an adult class open to students aged 13 and up.
