Bluegrass Fiddle with Jannell Canerday
This class is for YOU if you are an intermediate-level* fiddler who wants to start exploring the wide world of bluegrass! In the first edition of this class (offered in Winter 2024), we canvassed a large swath of repertoire, getting exposure to a new tune or song each week. This term, however, we will aim for DEEP, rather than WIDE. Instead of one tune per class, I’d like to limit our “new” tunes selection to 3-4 and spend extra time deepening our understanding and comfort of each tune. We also plan to revisit some favorites from the Winter 2024 edition of the class, such as "Billy in the Lowground" and "Salt Creek," playing around with variations and increasing our speed. We aim to finish the class feeling confident and well-heeled in our selection of tunes!
No worries if you weren’t around for the Winter 2024 class– we can catch you up!
*For our purposes, “intermediate” players:
- are comfortable with tone production and playing in time
- can pick up tunes by ear in D, G, C, and A
(I typically provide notation as a reference, but we'll try to get the tunes primarily by ear in class.)
Class Objectives
- Most importantly ⇨ having fun while tackling new skills!
- Increase comfort while playing
- Learn a passel of classic jam tunes
- Practice kickoffs and how to “lead” when it’s your turn
- Try a break on a song
- Tune into basic, common chord progressions
- Consider some ways you might personalize a tune when you play it
- Get a feel for the flow of a jam, and a sense of some of the more widely accepted etiquette practices
Prerequisite: Fiddle 3
This is an adult class open to students aged 13 and up.
