Couples Therapy for You and Your Guitar with Thomas Deakin
This class will meet in-person on: 10/19, 10/26, 11/2, 11/23, and 12/14
You can hum, you can sing, you can hold a tune. You hear music in your head, go to your guitar, pick it up and........ nothing. Why is it so difficult to musically connect to this instrument?
First of all, you are not alone. Guitar is an evasive and confounding thing, it's not just you. Melodies and sounds are at first elusive, eventually frustrating, and advancement is hard won. Many people resort to playing by pattern, or shape, or tab without ever truly musically connecting to guitar. This class is to connect the music you hear inside yourself with your instrument using the best tool we have, our voice.
If you want your guitar to sing but are scared or uncomfortable, reticent, or uninterested in being a singer, this class is for you. We will uncover the logic of the fretboard not as shapes and dots, but as tones you control, connected to your voice, that is, your inner music. If you feel a vast difference between the sounds you hear and what is happening on the guitar, if you go to play and the tap shuts off, if you feel like you are constantly translating between you and your guitar, this class is for you. If you are an adventurous mandolinist, open minded fiddler, or some other kind of curious stringed instrument enthusiast, you are welcome to join as well. The ability to produce notes on your instrument and a willingness to sing audibly are the prerequisites for this class. Four classes will be in person so you can sing in a group and four classes will be video lessons so you can sing safely at home.
Due to the instructor's prolific touring schedule, five of of the classes will be in person, and the other three will be shared as full-length videos recorded to address the specific needs of the group as it progresses.
This is an adult class open to students aged 13 and up.
