Fiddle 2 with Andrew Taylor
For those looking to deepen their fiddle skills and expand their repertoire, this 8-week intermediate course invites players to explore traditional fiddling. Building on core techniques, we’ll explore a range of styles—from the rhythmic drive of Old Time and Bluegrass to the spirited sounds of Cajun, Cape Breton, and New England traditions. Through hands-on learning and ear training, students will gain confidence in new techniques such as double stops, slides, and basic ornamentation, bringing richer expression to their playing.
This course will teach three primary tunes embodying each style's unique flavor: a Cape Breton march, a lively New England contra dance tune, and a Cajun two-step, alongside beloved old-time and bluegrass standards. Our focus on rhythmic precision, phrasing, and blending harmonies will help students bring out the distinct character of each tune, and we’ll practice transitioning between styles for a versatile playing experience.
This class is perfect for fiddlers with a basic grasp of the instrument who want to expand their repertoire and refine their skills. Prerequisites: Fiddle 1 or equivalent experience—you should know a few tunes, have worked on tone production, and enjoy learning by ear. (Notation will be provided, but we’ll focus on learning tunes by ear in class.) Explore the rich fiddle traditions of North America and beyond, connecting every note to the vibrant history and joy of folk music.
