Furthering the Fundamentals with Thomas Deakin
Note: there will be no class on Tuesday, June 24th
Emphasis on fun? Or...mental! Do you love to play music? Big feelings, no words? Maybe you've hit a wall trying to communicate what you'd like a friend to play, or what you yourself are playing. Perhaps you have trouble remembering a song because you feel like you remember the sound of it, but have no concept attached to the sound? If you feel like a bigger world is out there, if only you could find the door, this class may be for you. Chords are not lonely; they come from huge families, living vibrant lives in busy neighborhoods. Melody lives there too, and when you zoom in, there is no difference between them. We have language to describe it all, and that can help us create concept. With concept, we can find freedom to construct our own scales and chords anywhere on a guitar neck, we can deftly imply chordal movement and substitution even with a single note instrument like a horn. We can voice chords any way we want, with any note in the bass. If this sounds confusing but interesting, come and join us. This is a class devoted to the musical basics. What is a major scale, and how is it made? What are chords, and where do they come from? What is music, and how do we hear it? Rhythm, voice, and listening will be heavily involved to explore what goes into the making of three-chord songs, and where they might go.
This is an adult class open to students aged 13 and up.
