Hazel Dickens Ensemble with Jenny Morse
Take a trip into the life and music of Hazel Dickens: singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, labor activist, and IBMA Hall of Fame inductee. Hazel's music championed the poor and working class, women's experience, and union action. This ensemble course focuses on Hazel's repertoire but includes jam etiquette/survival, and band coaching, as students will collectively choose 2-3 songs for public performance. We will supplement our discussion with (optional) readings and videos outside of class, but we will focus on making music together.
All fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, ukulele, dulcimer, and bass players are welcome. Students must know and be able to transition easily between basic chords on their instrument. Completion of a Folk School intermediate instrument class is a bonus.
Please specify your instrument in the notes. If you already have a favorite Hazel song please specify that too.
This is an adult class open to students aged 13 and up.
