
Intermediate West African Drumming with Charles Amewudah

Kpegisu & Gahu: Kpegisu is a high-energy genre that is historically associated with military preparation among the Ewes. Gahu is an adaptation of Kokosawa from Yoruba of Nigerial. Ewe people from Southeastern Ghana brought it to Ghana and increased the tempo more than double and named it Gahu. We will learn the fundamentals of these two traditional West African drumming styles, with a focus on understanding the various parts, rhythms, songs, and history of Kpegisu and Gahu.
In this class, you will:
- Make a connection with the Ewe history and Kpegisu, and Gahu drumming traditions.
- Sing some lyrics of Kpegisu and Gahu songs with the melody.
- Gain experience in how to execute Kpegisu and Gahu drumming rhythm.
- Know the names of the Ewe drums that are used for Kpegisu and Gahu drumming.
- Recognize the Kpegisu rhythm and beat.
- Recognize the Gahu rythm and beat.
- Participate in a West African drumming class with confidence.
Prerequisite: a previous Louisville Folk School African drumming class
This is an adult class open to students aged 13 and up.
