Jug Band Ensemble with Rick Quisol

This friendly, supportive class will offer students a chance to explore this contagiously fun musical style that had its roots in early 20th century Louisville. Jug band music enjoyed a resurgence in the 1960s thanks to artists like The Jim Kweskin Jug Band and The Grateful Dead.

We'll develop a repertoire from the genre, which comprises a mix of early Jazz, Tin Pan Alley, Dixieland (Trad Jazz), Novelty, Blues and early Country songs. Repertoire will include "You Rascal, You," "Mama Don’t Allow It," "Cake Eatin’ Man," "Who Walks In When I Walk Out," "Somebody Stole My Gal," "Blue Blues," and "Mack The Knife"

Students will learn:

• Jug band repertoire, including essential chord changes,
• How to keep a rhythm on a washboard,
• How to play melodies on the kazoo
• Historical insight from historian Michael Jones,
• How to play the jug,
• ...and how to bring all those elements together in an ensemble!

Prerequisite:

This class is for all levels and instruments, both traditional & homemade: jug, washboard, guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, ukulele, bass, kazoo, harmonica, or no instrument at all - come to sing along!

This is an adult class open to students aged 13 and up.
