Melodic Clawhammer Banjo with Chris Rodahaffer
This class will introduce clawhammer banjoists to techniques and concepts that will empower them to play fiddle tunes in a precise style that mirrors fiddle lines. Students will learn about scales and how to execute them effectively in a clawhammer style. We will use familiar clawhammer techniques to develop a nuanced style that elaborates on the melody and facilitates variation.
Some tunes we’ll cover:
- Five Miles of Ellum Wood
- Elzic's Farewell
- Bumblebee in a Jug
- Garfield’s Blackberry Blossom
To get the most out of this class, students should be comfortable with slides, hammer-ons, pull-offs, drop thumb, alternate tunings (sawmill, double C), and syncopation. While we will emphasize learning by watching and listening, tabs will be provided for all the material we cover.
Prerequisites:
Clawhammer 3 or equivalent
This is an adult class open to students aged 13 and up.
