My Pet Song with Thomas Deakin
Are you looking to branch out or into new sounds, rich harmony, and weird chords? Jazz curious, but unsure where to start? Leave your hangups at home and join in for a relaxed approach to America's homegrown musical art form. Autumn Leaves is one of the most standard of the Jazz Standards. Join the legions who've started their explorations of the Great American Songbook with this very tune.
My Pet Song spends the entire session digging deep into one song. Learn and apply an approach that can be used for any practice in any genre. Will there be ear training and jamming? Yup. Vocalizing and theory? Oh yeah. Joy and terror? Only if it's going right. Sheets and tablature? Absolutely not. Come along for an ear-based approach to music, listening from the bottom up to figure out what this tune's all about.
This class is for anyone interested in expanding their ear and learning which sounds mean what in a musical context. We start by going over how to hear, then how to talk about chords and scale intervals, how to build chords from those scales, and common ways to change those chords into more compelling sounds that pull us through a song. We'll be going low and slow, looking for a way to continue the lifelong journey of understanding what music is doing and what our part in it can be. Don't be afraid, this is your chance to explore an ambitious pursuit in a light hearted and totally judgement free environment. Also, there will probably be cookies.
