Old-Time Ensemble with Paul Martin
In this ensemble class, we will concentrate on how fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar, and bass work together to support a fiddle tune or a song within the old-time string band tradition. We will focus on the specific role or “pocket” that each instrument fills and take a broader look at how all the instruments interact. We will highlight individual instrumental techniques, but the class will focus on creating a cohesive sound. We'll split our time between tunes and songs and discuss how best to present traditional music to a modern audience.
Together, we will:
- Play by ear
- Rehearse in a low-pressure, fun environment
- Sing lead and in harmony
- Hone arrangements of our favorite tunes and songs
- Figure out how to think and act as a band
This is an adult class open to students aged 13 and up.
