Pet Songs: A Jazz Primer with Thomas Deakin
Are you exhausted by Youtube clickbait, indecipherable manuals, and confounding chord charts? Perhaps you enjoy the sounds of what may be considered jazz, or maybe you're asking yourself, "why can't they just play the right notes?!" There is vast open space in the world of harmony and melody, but it can be difficult to access without study, an open heart, and a bit of guidance along the way.
Come on in for an introduction by way of the songs "All of Me" and "After You've Gone." If you play a chromatic instrument (of course this includes the voice!) and are curious about chords extending beyond the basics, you may be interested in this curated, structured, challenging but super friendly chance to comp, solo, improvise, and arrange these two classic songs.
All chromatic instruments are welcome. All levels are welcome, but the material will be geared toward the advancing player who is familiar with basic harmony, and ready to move away from chord shapes, into actual chord construction. If you play guitar/mandolin/fiddle and are mystified by the previous sentence, perhaps consider the class Fretboard Walkabout.
This is an adult class open to students aged 13 and up.
