Playtime: How Do I Ensemble? with Thomas Deakin
Maybe you want to play music with others but aren't sure how to make that happen. Maybe you feel like you're not ready, you don't know enough, you're not "good" enough. Maybe you find the prospect of trying in front of strangers terrifying. If that's you, but you want to play music with other people anyway, come indulge your fear and inadequacies as we learn to enjoy the crush and expansion, the camaraderie and joy, the inexpressible freedom in the utterly inconsequential act of music with others! Let's fail upwards together, working out some basic ground rules for jamming as we go.
We'll start with simple tunes and see what happens. It might be "Happy Birthday," or "Giant Steps." Just kidding, it won't be "Giant Steps." "You Are My Sunshine," "Love Me Tender," and "The Lonesome Blues " will form a basis for the early jams, to be added onto as required.
Wynton Marsalis described ensemble playing as "the only truly democratic experience available in America." Join the experience as we figure out how to fit voice and instruments together, giving and taking, listening and playing, making room and filling space.
This class is for folks who have some experience on their instrument, be it bass, guitar, french horn, Yaybahar, or voice! Due to the anarchic nature of music, and the importance of listening to everyone else, class size will be limited to five.
This is an adult class open to students aged 13 and up.
