Swimming the Harmonic River with Thomas Deakin

If we look sideways at the notes of a C minor seven chord (C, Eb, G, and Bb), we can find the exact notes that make up the chord Eb6. A minor chord is a major chord?! What's this lunacy? More importantly, what might it mean for us, and what can we do with that? This is a chance to explore together, slowly, the lush world of harmony not as static chords, but as moving voices. Not looking at sounds as grips, or shapes, but as moving, tickling, sliding, sensuous sounds.
This is for anyone and everyone, although it will likely be most helpful if you've taken a class with me before, as it will involve a lot of note finding by name and interval, extensive ear training, and singing. We will be using common Western harmonic ideas, combined with some thoughts from the late great Dr. Barry Harris, to construct our own chord progressions guided by melody.
We will slow down the process of harmonic improvisation until it becomes something more like composition, and see what we find.

All chromatic instruments/vocalists are welcome; this is an intermediate-level class.

This is an adult class open to students aged 13 and up.
